Hi All. A little explanation of the title is necessary, even though it is somewhat self explanatory. I bought my first turntable two years ago, having grown up with the unrestrained hiss of copied cassettes and the crisp perfection of cds. I wasn't possessed with an overwhelming nostalgia for the warm sound, or the crackles that give each record its own crooked personality. I hadn't learned to hate, or love, the surface noise that can sometimes accompany even brand new records. The only record in my household was my wife's copy of the White Album that she couldn't part with when her collection went to enthusiastic dealers on a cold Saturday morning, but we had nothing to play it on.
So, how did the vintage form of listening end up being my first choice? Easy to answer, but not so easy to explain. I listened to lots of music, and I liked the sound; after a while. Then I preferred the sound. Now it is becoming my favourite way to listen, while I tend to use my digital collection for background music and music while moving. Why...?
That is one of the topics that I wish to explore in some depth, but why not talk about some of the vinyl that makes its way to my player as well? Not all vinyl is the same... Anyways, til next time.
